At least 10 per cent of all third and fourth year BE students should decide to do something impactful

Hyderabad: Hyderabad-born Massachusetts Institute of Technology Prof. Ramesh Raskar said on Wednesday that at least 10 per cent of all third and fourth year BE students should decide to do something impactful as their college project. He said the digital age had brought immense opportunities that are too difficult to be ignored.
Prof. Raskar was speaking at the IIIT, Hyderabad on Wednesday. He heads the MIT Media Labs Camera Culture research group and holds nearly 40 US patents. “At least 10 per cent of the students should decide to do something highly impactful, like things that will help change Hyderabad or even India, as part of their third or fourth year projects,” Prof Raskar said. He said that the world had become much more complex and twisted today because of the advent of digital technology. This is pertinent considering that startup culture is picking up very fast.
His advice to youngsters was: “Work on impactful things, iterate and work in teams.” “If you have an idea, it is not going to grow if you keep it to yourself. You have to discuss with as many people as possible. Working in teams is very important. Venture capitalists are ready to fund ideas but they get either weak teams working on a good idea or a strong team working on weak ideas,” Prof. Raskar said.
Prof Raskar and his team have also started a platform called the REDex where anyone with an idea can go and discuss it with the experts in the respective fields. REDex is holding a camp on Thursday at the Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI) at 4 pm.
