Kumbh Mela: Reports of rise in condom supply leave organisers miffed

Reports claim 5.40 lakh have been ordered 'to meet demand' during holy festival

Nashik: Just days ahead of the commencement of Kumbh Mela, those associated with the festival are furious about reports regarding surge in supply of condoms in Nashik.

According to reports, the Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) authorities will be despatching 5.40 lakh condoms to Nashik to meet the demands of the large number of people at the event.

Organisers and pilgrims have been left shocked at the very idea of linking condoms to the holy festival that is revered by all Hindus.

According to an India Today report, some sadhus said that those who have linked large quantities of condoms with Kumbh Mela do not know the spirit of the festival. One of the sadhus even suspected a scam in the procurement of condoms for an event where its usage would be the least.

Meanwhile, MSACS claimed that the controversy has been uselessly created and misrepresented.

"First of all reports of supplying 5.40 lakh condoms to Nashik is not correct. The number of condoms that are being supplied to Nashik are 2.60 lakhs and this has nothing to do with the Kumbh Mela being held there,” the organisation was quoted as saying.
