Sold! Kingfisher now belongs to Heineken, bought at Rs 872 crore

Heineken now owns 42.1 per cent shares in United Breweries

Mumbai: Kingfisher, one of the most popular beer brands in India, has been bought over by Heineken. The Dutch brewer bought the entire 3.21 per cent shares owned by United Spirits in United Breweries, which is the maker of the beer. Heineken paid a total of Rs 872 crore to acquire the shares in the brewery.

Earlier, Heineken had 39 per cent share in United Breweries, which now has increased to 42.1 per cent after the buy over. The higher share in the total stakes of the company also gives higher control to the Dutch brewer in the company.

However, the takeover does not mean that Kingfisher’s Vijay Mallya would lose all control over the firm. He will share same shareholder rights with his partner.
