Triple joy: Identical triplets born in Nellore

Nellore: It was a happy homecoming for a rare set of identical female triplets born three weeks ago in Nellore. The babies were handed over to the parents, Pasam Penchalamma and Penchalakumar who is a small time farmer in Gollakandukuru in Nellore rural mandal.
Senior gynaecologist Dr Manjula A., said, “Triplets are rare, we rate them 1:80. To have identical triplets means that one egg was split into three in the womb. Hence all the three babies were in one placenta and were identical.” Identical triplets that develop without fertility treatments are extremely rare, said gynecologist Dr Yasodhara.
Nellore’s triplets were born from natural conception. The babies were delivered at the Ravi Institute of Child Health Hospitals in Nellore three weeks ago. While the delivery was normal, gynaecologists in Hyderabad said normal delivery of triplets is rare.
Dr Hema Diwaker, senior gynaecologist, said, “It was a pre-term delivery and that is the reason it was normal. Usually, normal delivery of triplets is very risky as there is inter-locking, like a head will come out of one baby and the leg of the other baby will be entangled with it.”
Luckily for the patient, the womb had partitioned inside, and the three babies were divided into three different rooms so that there was no interlocking during delivery. Dr T. Ravikumar of the hospital explained that the babies had low birth weights — at 1.4 kg, 1.5 kg and 1.6 kg — and had to be kept in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for two weeks.
He said that two of the babies were suffering from respiratory problems and one had a brain-related ailment at the time of birth. They also had under-developed lungs. “They have stabilised and are doing well,” said Dr Ravikumar who headed the team that treated the babies. The treatment of the triplets was done for free under the Dr NTR Vydya Seva Scheme.
