KOCHI: Kochi has not been hit by the rising prices of essential goods unlike the other cities in the state.
Kochi markets have defied the general trend with the prices of rice, pulses and vegetables remaining stable for the last couple of months.
According to wholesale vegetable dealers, a major factor for this is the decreasing dependence on Tamil Nadu markets.
“Earlier, vegetable prices in the state were dictated by Coimbatore, Ootty and Otaanchatram markets. However, with other states like Karnataka starting vegetable supplies, the prices are now under control. The widespread organic farming initiatives have also been successful,” said Latheef, a vendor.
“The prices are in the range of Rs 15 to Rs 30 for all vegetables. Only cauliflower and onion cost more at Rs 40 and Rs 52 per kg respectively. Popular items like ladies finger and cowpeas are priced at Rs 16 and Rs 24 respectively,” said Saji, a wholesale dealer at Ernakulam market.
The rates of some essential commodities like sugar and chilly have dropped recently. Traders say that the prices will go up only by Onam and the beginning of Sabarimala pilgrim season when the demand will be the maximum.
