Prashant Bhushan: Central Information Commission’s order defied

Mr Bhushan noted that political parties had defied the CIC’s order for over two years
New Delhi: Prashant Bhushan also argued that the parties received huge sums from the public as donations and were not liable to pay taxes and must therefore be accountable to the public. Mr Bhushan noted that political parties had defied the CIC’s order for over two years.
The petitioners sought greater transparency and accountability in the functioning of all parties in India.
The petitioners said that under the Central Information Commission’s order of June 3, 2013, all recognised national parties should be brought under the Right to Information Act 2005 as public authorities, and thereby fulfil all obligations under the provisins of the Act.
They wanted a direction to all parties to disclose for public scrutiny complete details of their income, expenditure, donations and funding. Great harm was being caused to the public interest due to lack of transparency in the political system and political parties, as the electoral system was generating huge sums in black money and large sums were being spent on every election, leading to a violation of citizens’ rights, they claimed.
