Karnataka: One farmer suicide every 6 days!
Belagavi: One farmer has committed suicide every six days during the last three years despite various schemes launched by the state government for the benefit of this community.
The state government revealed shocking information in the Legislative Council on Tuesday that in last three years, including sugarcane growers, 183 farmers have committed suicide after failing to repay their loans. Of them, 139 ended their lives after the Congress government headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assumed office in May 2013. In six months, 33 farmers who ended their lives, who borrowed loans from public sector and cooperative banks.
Replying to a question by JD(S) member B. Ramakrishna, sugar and co-operation minister Mahadeva Prasad said due to non payment of dues to the farmers by managements of sugar factories, few farmers have committed suicide in Karnataka. The government has given a compensation of Rs one lakh to the next of kin of these farmers, he added.
