Dog sterilisation drive gets boost from Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: The mass sterilisation drive launched jointly by SAI Trust and Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP) – the nodal agency appointed by the Urban Affairs Department – will be re-launched in the state capital this week.
The local self-government department has sanctioned Rs 50 lakh for carrying out the sterilisation drive. As part of the initiative as many as 2000 dogs were sterilised till day.
However, the drive was suspended following a fund crunch in March. The current plan is to finish the sterilisation drive in six months.
With complaints mounting on the stray dog menace, the government has decided to resume the drive. Executive director of the Sathya Sai Orphanage Trust K N Anandakumar said that the drive would be restarted this week.
“Earlier owing to the fund crunch, the government suspended the drive. But we placed a proposal before the urban affairs department. Till day, KSUDP has spent Rs 15 lakh for the drive and we have chipped in Rs 8 lakhs. The medicines are being distributed by the Veterinary department,” said Mr Anandakumar.
He said that there were around 9000 strays in the state capital. “The sterilisation drive is in its final phases at 15 wards in the city limits. We were doing 10 dogs a day and now we are planning to do it in shifts so that we can do more numbers,” said Mr Anandakumar.
