Bengaluru: Cubbon Park to be made more engaging for kids, adults

Soon, visitors will not have to wait till the weekend to buy fresh veggies from the Sunday farm

Bengaluru: Riding high on the success of traffic-free Cubbon Park during weekends, the Horticulture Department is making elaborate plans to make the city’s iconic park more appealing.

Soon, visitors will not have to wait till the weekend to buy fresh veggies from the Sunday farm. The Horticulture Department has proposed to set up permanent stalls on the park premises so that walkers and joggers can buy fresh produce every morning.

Cubbon Park Deputy Director Mahantesh Murugod said that the design of the stalls were being chalked out and the construction would begin soon. “As of now, three government agencies have come forward to set up stalls – Jaivik Krishik Society, Nurserymen Cooperative Society Ltd and Hopcoms. They will sell fruits, vegetables, organic edibles, fresh juices, plants, pesticides and other produce. These products are brought from the farmers and will directly reach consumers. These eco-friendly stalls are planned to benefit walkers and the farmers,” he said.

Mr Murugod said that the department decided to put up stalls, taking a cue from the overwhelming response it has received to the weekend farm in the park.

“Cubbon Park has become the city’s major attraction during weekends, and more people are visiting the park. At least 5,000 people visit the park on weekend. Hundreds of farmers and artists are benefiting from the weekend crowd. Following the demand from visitors, we have decided to set up permanent stalls,” he said.

Mr Murugod said that the department is now in a fix as the popularity is pushing them to find interesting activities that could engage the child and adult crowd at the park.
“Many families visit Cubbon Park every Sunday and we are trying to make the activities engaging. Though we still have four more days till Sunday, we are already worried as how to make the next weekend colourful,” he said.
