Prayers make us humble and selfless
For me, the Holy month means a period for purification of mind and body. It brings us closer to Allah. The prayers that we offer make us more humble and selfless, give us the confidence to lead a better life and serve our fellow beings in the best possible manner.
Besides, the Holy month has much more significance in the present times when certain sections are out to misinterpret religion to unleash violence against fellow beings and to promote intolerance and enmity.
I hope the period of Ramzan brings an opportunity for introspection, reflection and rectification of our mistakes. The fasting during the month also enables us to understand the sufferings of millions of people who cannot even afford two square meals, children who are dying because of malnutrition and mothers who are undernourished.
We can experience their pain and contribute in whatever way we can for such sections of society. Most Muslim families distribute provisions, clothes and medicines and even provide financial aid to economically weaker sections and this contribution is known as Zakat which also means purifying one's wealth and soul.
This is also to share our earnings or our successes with people who are not so fortunate. If we serve the poor and needy during this period, it is believed that Allah will bless us immensely with richness and prosperity. Let the Holy month bring peace and prosperity in society and strengthen communal harmony and brotherhood.
