Men flee on seeing officials, hunt is on
Coimbatore: The Anaimalai police seized explosive substance from an illegal quarry at Kaliyapuram in Pollachi on Saturday evening. Acting on a tip off, a team of revenue department officials raided the quarry and seized huge quantity of detonators and three tractors from the spot. The men, who were blasting away the rocks and loading them in the tractors, had fled away on seeing the revenue department officials.
The raid was carried out by revenue department officials led by Pollachi Thasildar S. Jayachitra, Zonal Deputy Thasildar Raja, and revenue inspector Vairamuthu at the quarry located along Narikalpathy to Thengaiparai Road in Kaliyapuram panchayat. Following a complaint by the revenue department officials, the Anaimalai police registered a case and seized 25 detonators and three tractors.
“It was a narrow escape for the revenue department staff as there was blast, when they raided the quarry site” said a cop. The police booked a case under IPC section 286 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) read with section 5 (Punishment for making or possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances) of the Explosive Substances Act.
Investigations revealed that a man had blasted away the rocks that bar entry into vast swathes of poramboke land. "He was planning to encroach the poramboke land by blasting away the rocks and make a way through it. However investigations are on to know if it was an illegal quarry," police said. A search is also underway to nab the tractor driver identified as Velusamy from Aliyar, who is on the run.
