Minor students learn to obey traffic rules the difficult way

They were slapped with 20 violations, including misbehaviour with cop, reckless driving
Bengaluru: “Being minors, we are not supposed to be prosecuted” – the kids who confidently parroted the above refrain apparently felt there was nothing wrong in driving a sports car recklessly through the city without a driver’s licence. Kids these days are an irrepressible breed -- when they are caught breaking traffic rules, they try and wriggle out of a tight spot by first arguing with the traffic cops and if that doesn’t work, by calling up their fathers and uncles on their phones.
Here’s a recent example. Four second PU students of Jain College in J.C. Nagar who were returning to their homes in Benson Town, ran into serious trouble with the traffic policemen at the Johnson Market junction under Ashok Nagar traffic police station limits on Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened at about 12:45 p.m. when police constable Raju Talwar, received a message on the wireless that a white modified sports car had jumped the signal at the Brigade Road near Opera Theatre junction and was coming towards Johnson Market.
When Raju Talwar spotted the car, he immediately tried to flag it down, but the driver of the car, instead of stopping, ran over the constable’s shoe, which made him more furious. The enraged constable demanded that the occupants of the car alight, but the students chose to stay inside. When the driver tried starting the car, the constable punched the windshield with his hand and broke it.
It was only then that the students realized the seriousness of the mess they were in. The four students got down and started arguing with the policemen, saying that they were minors and could not be prosecuted.
Inspector of Ashok Nagar Traffic police station, Anthony John, reached the spot and questioned the minors about their reckless driving without a licence. The students had no answer. Traffic got affected at the junction for a while when scores of policemen, including the Ashok Nagar law and order police, arrived at the spot to take stock of the situation. The policemen had to rough up the four students a bit to make them understand the seriousness of what they did as they continued to argue with the cops that they were minors and had done nothing wrong.
The car was seized by the police and was slapped with 20 violations, including: misbehaviour with policemen, dangerous or reckless driving, chased and caught, owner to be prosecuted and other offences. The fine amount came to over Rs 4000, said a senior police officer, who hopes the kids have learnt their lesson.
