Construction labourer forces wife to drink acid
The victim, identified as Promila Khatun, was rescued by her neighbours
BENGALURU: In a macabre incident a 40-year-old construction worker tried to kill his wife by forcing her to drink acid while she was asleep in Somasundarapala off Hosur Road on Sunday. The victim, identified as Promila Khatun (35), was rescued by her neighbours when she raised an alarm and rushed her to hospital. The accused husband has been identified as Khabara Sekh, a construction worker, and they have two children. Promila hails from Kolkata and had come to the city two months ago to stay with her husband.
According to the police, Sekh was not sending money back home after he came to city around seven months ago. After coming to the city Promila began working as domestic help in a nearby apartment. Soon, she learnt that Sekh was an alcoholic and frequently used to beat her up when she used to ask for money for day-to-day expenses and for sending it for her children, who were under the care of their grand parents.
On Saturday, the couple had a fight over the same issue following which Promila went to sleep. Sekh in a fit of rage went out and returned late in the night. He allegedly thrust a bottle of acid into her mouth.
Promila immediately woke up, raised an alarm and Sekh fled. The neighbours first rushed her to Bowring hospital from where she was later shifted her to Victoria Hospital. The doctors have registered a medico-legal case and said that the victim had received burn injuries on her face and internal organs. The Sarjapur police have taken up the case and begun investigations.
