BBMP poll: All eyes on election panel

Supreme Court has postponed the BBMP elections by eight weeks

Bengaluru: A day after the Supreme Court postponed the BBMP elections by eight weeks, all eyes are now on the State Election Commission, which has to come out with a fresh schedule for the polls. The commission is expected to take a decision in the first week of July. It had earlier fixed the elections for July 28.

The state government on Saturday received the copy of the judgment and the SC has made it clear that the eight-week breather begins from July 3. “The government will have time till August 28 to complete the election process. The SEC has to take the final decision in this regard,” said an officer.

Meanwhile, the BBMP office in Konenaagrahara ward number 113 witnessed some tense moments on Saturday after Congress leaders alleged that BJP members were including fake names in the electoral rolls. The police conducted a raid at the BBMP office in the evening after the Congress protest.

Mr P. Ramesh, who had lodged a police complaint, alleged that local BJP MLA S. Raghu is bringing people from Andhra Pradesh to register them as voters. “Local BBMP officials were registering the names based on the letter given by the MLA,” he said.

“Hundreds of voters have been given a single address for the voters’ list. The SEC should initiate stern action,” he said.
