UPSC results: Topper from Karnataka in top 10 league
Bengaluru: For city-based girl B. Fouzia Taranum the fact that she bagged 31st rank in the Civil Services Examination 2014 is yet to sink in. After the results were announced on Saturday, she said, “It is my childhood dream to become an IAS officer. My target was securing a rank within top 100. But when I come to know that I have secured 31st rank, I found it difficult to come with the terms with it.”
Fouzia, who is an IRS officer, said, “I am the first person in my family to do post-graduation and also to join the government service.” She did her B.Com from Jyoti Nivas college, PGDM from Christ University and also pursued PG diploma in sustainable development.
“My mother is a homemaker, father, a small businessman. It is my third attempt. Even though I become an IRS officer in 2012, IAS was my dream,” she recalled. The results brought cheers to 60 candidates from state, including the son of a former MLA. The state topper Nitish K created history by securing eighth rank.

For nearly a decade nobody from the state could break into the top 10 league. An alumnus of PESIT in Bengaluru, Nitish had last year secured 547th rank.
“Currently I am in Shimla, undergoing training in Indian Audit and Account Service. My native place is Udupi where I studied till class IV. Later I joined Navodaya school in Chitradurga, where I nurtured the ambition to pursue a career in civil service,” he said.
Nitish said his uncle Krishnamurth, a DySP, persuaded him to aim for a career in UPSC. “My father Ramakrishna Hebbar is a manager in Karnataka Bank and my mother Bharathi Hebbar is a homemaker,” he added. Mallikharjun V Mamani, who secured 434th rank, belongs to a powerful political family of North Karnataka region. His uncle Anand Mamani is the sitting MLA of Saundatti Yelamma constituency in Belagavi, while his father Rajanna Mamani had represented the constituency in 2004. “I have completed my B.E. in BVB college of Engineering. Immediately after the course I got offer from MindTree. But I did not accept it as cracking the Civil Services examination was my dream,” he said.
