Physically-disabled woman tops Civil Services examination

She took the issue to CAT and was accepted for training only recently

Hyderabad: Delhi-based Ira Singhal became the first physically-handicapped woman to top the civil services examination in which the top four positions were bagged by women.

Suffering from Scoliosis, a spine-related disorder, Ms Singhal, 31, an Indian Revenue Service officer, clinched the top position in her sixth attempt. Ms Singhal is currently training at the MCRHRD Institute in Hyderabad. She was allotted the IRS in 2010 but wasn’t accepted because of a disability.

She took the issue to the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) and was accepted for training only recently. She reached Hyderabad for her second phase of training on June 22.

“I am really glad and thankful to everyone who has helped me achieve this,” Singhal said. She also said her success should change the perspective towards girls.

Renu Raj, a doctor from Kerala, and Nidhi Gupta, also an IRS officer from Delhi, both 27, secured the second and third positions respectively, according to the results announced by Union Public Service Commission here on Saturday.
