Women occupy top slots in UPSC results
Renu Raj did her MBBS from Kerala and got the second rank in her first attempt
New Delhi: Scaling new heights, women bagged four of the top five slots in the civil services exam, the results for which were announced by the Union Public Service Commission on Saturday. Ira Singhal has secured the top spot, followed by Renu Raj, Nidhi Gupta and Vandana Rao.
Malayalis have performed creditably in the civil services examinations with Renu Raj from Changanassery bagging the second rank and K. Nitish eighth. Over six Keralites came in the top 50 list.
Renu Raj (27), a doctor from Kerala, and Nidhi Gupta (27), also an IRS officer from Delhi, secured the second and third positions, respectively. Vandana Rao, who is also from Delhi, has got the fourth rank while Suharsha Bhagat, an IRS (income-tax cadre) officer from Bihar, has got the fifth position.
Ms Raj, who is married, did her MBBS from Kerala and got the second rank in her first attempt. She made it clear that “marriage was not a handicap” and she “got the full support of her husband and family”. It was always her childhood dream to be an IAS officer, she said. Ms Raj, who is from Kottayam, works in a hospital in Kollam.
For Ms Gupta, an assistant commissioner of customs and central excise, it was a “proud moment’. The fourth topper, Ms Rao, topped the other backward classes (OBC) category. “I want to be an IAS officer as it gives you ample scope to do something worthwhile for the country,” she said.
