Safilguda road ignored for long

The alternative road via Tukaram Gate is also in very poor shape

Hyderabad: The Army, apparently to discourage civilian commuters has left the badly-pitted AOC swimming pool-Safilguda station road unrepaired. The Secunderabad Cantonment Board is responsible for the maintenance of the road, which has over 20 potholes.

This road is the main link between the thickly populated Safilguda, Malkajgiri and Nerdemet areas and Secunderabad.

Easily the worst part of the road is at the railway level crossing. Mr. Clifford Murry, who stays near the mini Tank Bund at Safilguda, said “The railway line is in the middle of the AOC area. The narrow road has no divider right from the railway crossing up to the swimming pool area and is badly damaged. The potholes have eaten up the road. With the road wearing off, the railway tracks jut out making it a nightmare for vehicle users.”

What is worse, road users do not know whom to complain — the defence authorities, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board, the abutting Malkajgiri municipality or the government’s roads and buildings department.

“Now and then the railway authorities fill up the crater-like potholes with mud and level the road. But, it is gone in no time,” said S. Srinath, a resident of R.K. Nagar.

The alternative road via Tukaram Gate is also in very poor shape. When contacted, a senior Army officer said the road had been inspected and tenders would be called to repair the road.
