Millets’ wealth must be explored: Vice- Chancellor
Millet processing and value addition should be explored through interdisciplinary research
Coimbatore: Post-Harvest Technology Centre of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is organising a 21-day training programme on Post Harvest Process and Value Addition of Millets for the development of functional foods to combat life style diseases.
Considering rich nutrition aspects in the millets, all the hidden information about the millets should be unearthed. Millet processing and value addition should be explored through interdisciplinary research, said Dr K. Ramasamy, vice- chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
“As millets production was shrinking, TNAU took up initiatives with support of Government of Tamil Nadu to produce millet seeds and make it available to the farmers on time and motivated them to cultivate millets which has paid rich dividend now. In the last two year, s production of millets has increased considerably reaching 122.8 metric tonnes,” he added.
The training programme is the outcome of three year of research project on food culture of South Asian Countries. In order to disseminate important findings of the project, a training programme is being conducted, said the course director Dr M. Varadharaju.
