Coimbatore: From Australia to Kovai for horses

Megan always accompanies Lottie in all her trips to different countries
Coimbatore: Women horse trainers from Australia and England have come all the way down to Coimbatore to train aspiring jockeys and horse riders in the city. And they are amazed by the discipline of the Indian horses. Lottie Lobb from England and Megan Bourke from Australia have been travelling around the world to interact with horse trainers and understand the nuances and art of horse training
“The horses here are amazing, well-mannered with sweet temperament. It is great to see lot of children showing interest to learn the tricks to handle horse at a very young age and they are really quick learners.”
The trainers, who are in there 20s, are thrilled that equestrian races are included in the Olympics games now. “It is a great move and our ultimate aim is to establish an Olympic team from India. Our hunt is on for young talents here and we do not know how long it would take. We have already started our expedition in Coimbatore and we are also exploring the Nilgiris region,” Megan said.
The women are here to exchange ideas and techniques of horse-riding and providing care for horses in India and their country. “As of now in India, we do not have any such courses. We are expecting that in future everyone should recognise this sport. Lottie and Megan have been giving us suggestions like bedding for horses. We are soon going to get affiliated by two foreign institutes,” said A S Sakti Balaji, a promoter of the sport from Alexander Equestrian Club.
During discussions with a friend, they came to know about the equestrian clubs in Coimbatore. After a trip to Japan, they set off to Coimbatore. And they will be here till September to train the aspiring horse riders in the city.
Megan always accompanies Lottie in all her trips to different countries. “The whole idea of spending so much time in different countries with different breeds of horses is to gain experience in horse riding completely. We are learning how horse riders in different countries function, and we want to pick up the best from each of them,” gleams Megan.
