Adani group inks deal for solar project in Tamil Nadu

Signing of MoU between Adani Group and will attract investments of Rs 7,588 crore

Chennai: Adani group, India’s largest private power producer, on Saturday signed a power purchase agreement with Tangedco to supply 648 MW from its five solar power generation centres to be set up at Kamuthi in Ramanathapuram district.

The PPA was signed in the presence of the Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, on Saturday at the secretariat immediately after she took oath as MLA. As per the agreement, Tangedco would purchase power at a cost of Rs 7.01 per unit for 25 years. In a detailed presentation made to the Chief Minister and officials, Adani group managing director Rajesh Adani said the Rs 4,536 crore project will be largest solar generation plant in the world.

I hope the project is successful and I hope your partnership with Tamil Nadu will continue,” Ms Jayalalithaa was quoted as telling Adani. Tangedco had already inked power purchase agreements with 31 private players to generate 436 MW of solar power. “The signing of MoU between Adani Group and with the other private players will attract investments of Rs 7,588 crore towards generation of 1,084 MW of solar energy in the state”, a release said.

Apart from the companies which has signed PPA, as many as 107 solar generators has registered with Tangedco to set up 2722.5 MW power plants. Of them the load flow study had been completed for 1132 MW plant proposed by 53 companies. “The steps to sign PPA will be taken if these companies submit their land documents and pay their deposits,” the release said, adding that Tangedco will take all the steps to reach the solar capacity addition target set by the Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Policy 2012. The policy has set a target of adding 3000 MW capacity solar power by 2015.

To evacuate the power generated from the solar plants to be set up in Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts, Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation had initiated steps to set up a 400 KV substation in Kamuthi at a cost of Rs 435.5 crore and 230 KV SS in Tiruchuli in Virudhunagar at Rs 47.51 crore. Besides, works were underway to lay transmission lines by Tantransco in Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Sivaganga districts at Rs 208.50 crore, it said. Chief secretary K. Gnanadesikan, Tangedco chairman and managing director Dr M. Saikumar and energy secretary Rajesh Lakhoni were also present on the occasion.
