Coimbatore: Cases against 36 helmet shops for overpricing

Coimbatore: After a surprise raid in about 150 retail shops, the labour department officials registered case on the owners of 36 shops for selling helmets much over the market price. As per the instructions of P. Amutha, labour commissioner, officials of the labour department including labour inspector Malarkodi conducted a surprise raid in several retail shops across
Coimbatore district and registered case on retail shop owners who were fleecing the public.
The cartons in the shops did not have the address of the manufacturer, some did not have ISI mark on the helmets and many were overpriced, way above the maximum retail price, said the labour inspector.
Ever since the helmet rule was enforced, there have been several complaints that the retailers have been making a killing.
A fake demand was created and the prices of the helmet jacked up.
Long queues were sighting in front of the retail shops in the city. In a few places in the city, the people also resorted to protests condemning the escalating price of helmets.
Assistant commissioner of labour C Thangavel has warned the retailers from cheating public and stated that severe action would be taken if they were found selling helmets without adhering to the stipulated norms.
