College reputation matters for students

Top companies recruit students from all branches in these reputed engineering colleges

Chennai: Anna University's engineering counselling this year has an interesting trend. Students look for reputation of colleges rather than the course of study. Even though a student has an option to select a top branch in a tier-2 college, they are reluctant to take it rather prefer a mediocre branch in a top college, as top companies recruit students from all branches in these reputed engineering colleges.

An engineering aspirant from Coimbatore said despite having electronics and communication engineering in one of the private engineering colleges in his locality he preferred to join automobile engineering in Anna University’s MIT campus as top IT companies recruited students from the university every year. “Students are aware that top IT and core companies have accredited only reputed top colleges so that they will get every chance to be recruited by these companies even though they study courses like civil and bio technology.

This has made students look at colleges not the branch of study,” eminent academician and career counsellor Jayaprakash A.Gandhi said. Of the 11,845 students called for counselling so far this year, 9,170 joined the engineering stream, 2,606 abstained, and 69 skipped counselling. Six students each had taken civil engineering and mechanical engineering in Tamil medium so far this year. As many as 1,195 students joined computer science this year and 614 opted for information technology, which showed that these streams were also most sought after by students this year.
