Kerala youth wins big in Paris

Team explored use of gas not only in trucks but also in passenger cars

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thomas Abraham, a 22-year-old pursuing his masters in oil and gas engineering in a UK university and who has roots in Kerala, was part of the winning team at the World Gas Conference’s Youth Event held in Paris in the first week of June.

Abraham’s eight-member team won the Youth Event for their presentation on the topic: ‘Response of the Youth to the Energy Transition’.

The winning team, of which Mr Abraham was the youngest, explored the use of gas as a transportation fuel, not just for boats and trucks, but also passenger cars someday.

“By thinking about gas as a fuel, we realized how much difference it could make in the future. And maybe we’ll find ourselves working on it in our careers, if CNG takes off. That would be pretty exciting!,” Abraham said.

Mr Abraham did his 10th standard at Riverside Public school, Kotagiri, Nilgris. He did his Plus-two in Chennai and Mechanical Engineering at Anna University.

After this he joined Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, UK for his MSc in Oil & Gas Engineering.

“My father hails from Chempalathara family, Kottayam and is an export marketing person who worked in MRF Exports, AOSS (Oil & Gas) marketing in Dubai and is now with an EOU Pharma company SANCE PHARMA. My mother is a fashion designer hailing from Mangalam family of Ernakulam,” Abraham said in an email from UK. His grandparents are still in Kerala.

Established three years ago as part of the World Gas Conference, the Youth Event is designed to attract young talent to the industry. 150 young professionals from around the world were selected and sponsored for the Youth Event by energy companies.

They were put into teams which competed against each other throughout the event, culminating in the final four groups presenting their project to the conference which were then judged by the audience.
