KOZHIKODE: After the success of ‘Operation Sulaimani’ to feed the poor, the District Collector is all set to impart confidence and self-defence techniques to the girls in the district.

In yet another novel initiative from the District administration, the inmates of the Girls Home at Vellimadukkunnu will be given training in martial arts free of cost.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Kozhikode District Collector N Prasanth said that learning self-defence techniques from childhood will boost the self-confidence and self-esteem of the girls.

“Different from other girls of their age group, the inmates of Girls Home come from very difficult and unusual backgrounds. They lack exposure to society compared to others and are the most vulnerable among similar age girls. It is our responsibility to provide them with education as well as a better outlook. Through this programme we are aiming to relive them from depression and stress and to prepare them to face challenges with better skills,” he said.

The Collector added that the programme would be expanded to other similar institutions, after assessing its success. It is a nine month course. Pain and Palliative Care Technical

Advisor Dr Suresh Kumar, who mooted the idea of ‘Othiram ‘, said that the programme would make a definite impact on the life of the girls.

“These girls generally confine themselves to their own world and rarely get chances to get exposed to the outer world. The course will give them the opportunity not only to be physically fit but also the benefits of doing group activities,” he opined.
