Cash-for-vote witness gets Elvis Stephenson-like cover

Hyderabad: The key witness in the cash-for-vote scam Malcom Taylor is getting security at par with nominated MLA Elvis Stephenson following threats from unidentified persons. The witness was also approached by a group of men in the last week of June luring him with a hefty amount in return for an amended statement. Mr Taylor’s number was printed by a local daily along with that of the nominated MLA’s number in an edition as part of the report.
On a single day the witness and the MLA received 300 unidentified calls, following which they had to ask the service provider to block unknown numbers. Initially, Mr Taylor was provided with two security guards at his residence at Tarnaka where TD MLA A. Revanth Reddy was nabbed by the ACB.
In June last week, the witness’s mother-in-law, who was present at the residence, was asked by a person who claimed to be from the police about Mr Taylor’s residence, office and property details. The person had also enquired with his neighbours.
A source close to Mr Taylor said, “On June 27, security was beefed up for him. However, before this, a group of men visited him at his office at Secunderabad and offered him a hefty amount to amend his statement.
The witness was also given a deadline of June 30 by the men, but following a negative response from Mr Taylor, they left the office but have been making calls to him. Mr Taylor was threatened by a person who narrated his whereabouts from attending mass at church to having evening tea. Mr Taylor has refused to lodge a complaint against the men and the callers.
The security arrangements for the witness, includes a blue proof car, guards at his residence and office at S.D Road Secunderabad. Also the two have been given new phones and a different number.
