Telangana to start green drive to plant 230 crore saplings in five years

Government has made arrangements to plant 40 crore saplings from July to September

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao will on Friday launch the Telangaku Haritha Haraam project to plant 230 crore saplings over five years. The Telangana government hopes the effort will set a world record.

The government has made arrangements to plant 40 crore saplings from July to September as part of the initiative to improve green cover. Mr Rao will formally launch the scheme by planting a sapling at the famous Chilkur Balaji temple on the city outskirts on Friday.

Addressing a press conference at Secretariat on Thursday, forests minister Jogu Ramanna said, “After Brazil and China, Telangana is the only state in the world to take up the greenery movement on such a large scale. The government is aiming to increase green cover to 33 per cent in the state through this initiative.”
He said the government had taken measures involve the public in the programme.
