CPM’s Indian Union Muslim League bashing hints at new strategy

M.A. Baby terms League as communal party

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM politburo member M A Baby has termed the Indian Union Muslim League as a communal party and ruled out any possibility of having an alliance with that party in future.

In an interview to a regional channel, Mr Baby said that Muslim League was practising communal politics in the state. There was no question of going for new allies in the wake of the defeat in Aruvikkara bypoll, he added.

He said there was a need for introspection of CPM stand towards believers. The party and the LDF should be able to involve the believers in their activities, he said and added that Hindu communalism needed to be counter by rallying the majority community.

Baby’s statement is significant as it comes close on the heels of Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan’s statement that minority appeasement was one of the major factors for UDF candidate’s victory in Aruvikkara. According to political observers, these statements clearly indicate CPM’s move to woo the majority community especially in the wake of huge inroads being made by the BJP into their strong holds.

The CPM is clearly worried about the exodus of its workers to the BJP fold in many parts of the state and also the attempts being made by the Sangh Parivar to increase its influence among OBCs and Dalits who are traditional supporters of the Left in the state.
