Shops causing traffic jams razed in Coimbatore

Establishments were leased out for last 30 years
Mettupalayam: Tense moments prevailed in Mettupalayam town when 12 shops of the Mettupalayam municipality near the bus stand were razed down as they were hampering traffic.
The Mettupalayam Jawaharlal Nehru bus stand is located at the foothills of the Queen of Hills, Ooty and witnesses footfall of several thousand people on a daily basis. There were about 13 shops right in front of the bus stand that were leased out by the Municipality for the last 30 years. These shops were adding to the chaotic traffic snarls in the area and were obstructing free movement of buses in and out of the bus stand.
The lease of these shops expired on March 31, 2015 and just as the Municipality had decided to demolish these shops to decongest traffic, the traders who occupied the shops moved the court. As the deadline lapsed on Tuesday, the municipal commissioner Malligai along with other officials visited the bus stand and razed the 12 shops using three earth movers.
The debris was moved using five tipper lorries. Of the 13 shops, 12 have been demolished the one shop which is standing has sought time till July 7. The traders of the 12 shops that were razed down on Wednesday vacated with their belongings on Tuesday.
