Karimnagar: Rape victim gets Rs 1 lakh compensation
Victim was a Class II student at a government ashram school run by the social welfare department
Karimnagar: The state government has given Rs 1 lakh to a 10-year-old girl, who was sexually assaulted by a 53-year old cook of social welfare hostel of Jammikunta in 2013, following the directives of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The commission ordered the state Backward Class welfare department to extend monetary relief to the victim under Section 18 of Protection of Human Rights Act, 1983, after examining the evidence, as its employee was found to have committed the offence.
The commission received a complaint about the assault on August 29, 2013. The girl was raped by Raj Mohammad, a cook at the hostel, on the intervening night of August 16 in 2013 and several times thereafter. The victim was a Class II student at a government ashram school run by the social welfare department in Jammikunta.
The accused is a resident of Akunoor village in Saidapur mandal. The victim was admitted to a hospital when her condition deteriorated. Based on a complaint lodged by her father, the police took up investigations. Medical reports confirmed that she was sexually assaulted.
The accused was arrested on August 29, 2013. Upon being interrogated, Raj Mohammed admitted that he had assaulted the girl on August 16 and continued to do so for the subsequent four days by threatening to kill her.
Based on a preliminary enquiry, P. Natheniel, assistant social welfare officer of Huzurabad, D. Dhanalaxmi, HWO, and four teachers of the school were suspended for not informing their officers about the incident and for trying to destroy evidences. Out of the seven accused, four were arrested and three obtained anticipatory bail.
