Ramzan flavours fill Kozhikode streets
Kozhikode: When thousands of devotees break their fast during the Ramzan month after sunset, the smart street food entrepreneurs host instant Iftar feasts for the Kozhikodans.
The street food and restaurant specialities include samosas, cutlets, pazhamporichathu, unnakai, chattipathiri, muttamala, muttasurka and kozhiyada, which are essential dishes during the season.
“Ramzan requires Muslims to fast from sunrise till sunset without a morsel of food or a sip of water for one month, but at the same time the Iftar after the fasting opens up a wide variety of foods for the community,” said Ismail Aboobacker, a street food vendor near Palayam. From Arabian to the traditional food of the community, this season offers numerous dishes, he added.
People from all over Malabar irrespective of religion get the taste of Malabari food, especially in the makeshift shops selling samosas and other fried items.
Iftar has taken a modern look with the opening of a few cafeterias in the city and some among them offer neatly- packed Iftar kits that contain fruit salad, cutlets, dates, brownie and juices.
