Elikkod Adivasi threaten to kill themselves
THRISSUR: Elikkod Adivasi colony residents have threatened to commit mass suicide after their appeals for the repair of the road that leads to the colony has fallen on deaf ears.
According to Samara Samathi chairman Mukundan, the road, a three km stretch, has been in a dilapidated condition for the last 30 years. There had been attempts by the Palapilly Panchayath to asphalt the road but to no avail.
“The current state of the road is desperate. It was, a year ago we started to protest against the road but no authorities turned up then”, added Mukundan. Meanwhile, this January 2015, MP Jayadevan promised the colony residents that Rs 22 lakhs had been sanctioned from the MP fund and the work would be started soon. But yet no works have been initiated on the road.
For Elikkod colony, which is home to estate workers and 22 adivasi households, the road is the only access to the town. It is also learnt that even autorickshaws and cars refuse to ply on this road which is devoid of streetlights. Meanwhile, the local governing body and forest department have alleged foul play.
Adivasi colony residents have given the authority an ultimatum till July 5 and if their pleas are not heard, 5 adivasi members would end their lives in front of a government office, said Samara samithi members.
