Trinamool MLAs face music for attending MP Mukul Roy’s Iftar party
Kolkata: Two Trinamool MLAs — Shiuli Saha from Haldia in East Midnapore and Silbhadra Dutta from Barrackpore — were suspended a day after they attended sidelined MP Mukul Roy’s Iftar party at Nizam Palace.
Significantly, the party leadership did not take any action against Mr Roy. The party secretary general Partha Chatterjee announced their suspension pending inquiry on Monday.
The two MLAs earned the wrath of the party leadership for their closeness to Mr Roy. Sources said that soon after reports of the Iftar party at Nizam Palace was aired on Sunday, Trinamool’s disciplinary committee went into a huddle.
The party is informing Speaker of state Assembly Biman Banerjee about its decision to suspend the two MLAs. Reacting to the move, Mr Dutta asked whether it was a crime to be seen with Mr Roy. “Why don’t they suspend Mukul da then?” he asked.
Relations between chief minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee and Mr Roy deteriorated after he was questioned in the Saradha chit fund scam case on January 30.
