Tiruchy: Rotary honours ‘Dheepam’ artiste

A compact disc on a short film on ‘Wings to fly’ was released on the occasion
Tiruchy: The Rotary club of Tiruchirappalli Shakthi presented ‘Shakthi star achiever award’ to Kalieaswari Srinivasan, a theatre and film artiste, who has played a lead role in the award winning film “Dheepam” at a function here on Sunday.
Allirani Balaji, president of the Rotary club of Tiruchirappalli Shakthi, in her address, recollecting the work done by Kalieaswari in DEEPAM film that won the Palme d’Or award at Cannes, said she had demonstrated her passion for acting in the film.
Ms Balaji further said that they are very happy to honor women achievers as social service was the Rotary’s motto and they aim to bring women achievers to the forefront. They also focus on women education since they believed in gender equality and work towards the empowerment of women. “Women have to be educated to stand on their own legs,” she asserted.
The Rotary club of Tiruchirappali Shakthi wanted to provide an opportunity to Tiruchiites to know about the achievements of Ms.Kalieaswari Srinivasan, she added.
“Dheepam” is a French drama film directed by Jacques Audiard. The film tells the story of three Tamil refugees who flee the civil war-ravaged Sri Lanka and come to France, in the hope of reconstructing their lives. The film won the Palme d’Or award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. (The Palme d’Or is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival). Ms KalieswariSrinivasnhas played the lead role in this film.

Ms Balaji said that the club has donated a reverse osmosis drinking water plant to the Sri Nachiyar temple in Woraiyur, in Tiruchy city. It would mainly benefit the people at the ‘Annadhana koodam’. The temple authorities needed this facility to augment supply of drinking water to the devotees at the ‘koodam’, she added.
