Puducherry to take a leaf out of Fort museum

Trade is common strand both French and British period museums share
Chennai: Puducherry government museum, which boasts of exquisite French era collection and also an interesting array of specimens of Chola and Pallava art from Pondicherry and Karaikal will be modernised and it has been planned to model the display similar to the techniques followed at the historic Fort Museum within the Fort St. George raised by the British.
At present the work to reorganise and modernise the museums is on and the authorities have sought the technical help of the Fort Museum, here, being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
According to Ms. P. Raghini, director of art and culture department, Puducherry, who was here, there is scope for improvement and efforts were on to reorganise the galleries so as to make them attractive to the visitors.
Agreeing that joint efforts could bring museums closer to the people, Ms. K. Moortheeswari, deputy superintending archaeologist, Fort Museum, said the display techniques could be enhanced to allure. “Though we have several hundreds of artifacts, we put up theme based display to showcase our heritage and history,” she adds.
In addition to bronze sculptures of god and goddess and a wide gathering of temple lamps, handicrafts and art, the Puducherry museum shares certain similarities with the Fort Museum here, especially the relics pertaining to the French and Roman coins and palanquin.
The Puducherry museum also houses superb collections of sculpture located in the Bharathi Park on the remains of archaeological findings from the Arikamedu Roman settlement. It also inspires one to explore the French legacy. Trade is another common strand that both the French and British period museums share.
