Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad cuts 97,000 seats

Fewer tech colleges lose affiliations than last year in TS

Hyderabad: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad has made massive cuts in private engineering colleges’ intake this year as well.

About 97,000 seats have been cut for this academic year, leaving 86,195 seats for students in Telangana. Out of these, 62,744 seats will be available in the TS Eamcet counselling.

The remaining seats will be available for students under the management quota. Unlike last year, when 143 private engineering colleges were denied affiliations for lack of faculty and infrastructure, this year only 25 private engineering colleges have lost affiliations.

JNTU Hyderabad officials said 225 engineering colleges will be allowed to participate in counselling, but with cuts in their intake according to their infrastructure.

As a result, in the 225 engineering colleges in TS (affiliated this year by JNTU Hyderabad), 76,635 seats will be available.

Added to these will be approximately another 10,000 seats affiliated to Osmania University and Kakatiya University.

There are about 3,000 government engineering college seats in Telangana. JNTU Hyderabad vice-chancellor Shailaja Ramaiyer said, “A lot of engineering colleges have improved their facilities and hired faculty as well. The entire exercise that we are undertaking is yielding results, he said, adding, “we will continue to monitor all colleges. We are still getting reports of some colleges hiring dubious faculty. We will take action if there is any wrongdoing.”

As reported earlier, the number of seats that will be available in TS Eamcet counselling this year will be almost equal to the number of students likely to appear for web counselling.

Almost half of the seats will be in the Computer Science, Engineering and Electronics and Communications Engineering branches this year with about 45.000 seats in these two branches.

However, the heat still remains on private engineering colleges as the total intake this year is almost the same as last year.

Before last year’s Eamcet counselling, the total seats were 1.84 lakh. Almost 101 private engineering colleges will not have admissions this year again. About 55 have shut down on their own.

Officials from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad said that web counselling is likely to commence from July 6 as per the Hyderabad High Court suggestion.
