Experts unhappy with National Green Tribunal work
Hyderabad: Experts are dissatisfied with the functioning of NGT. The NGT was approached mainly on two issues, that is, whether steps for cleaning Hussainsagar and preventing pollution is going on as per what the government submitted to High Court and whether the lake is being dewatered. But the NGT added additional points and set up a two-member committee of experts who have not yet reached Hyderabad.
The NGT issued the order on May 29 asking the committee to check the factors responsible for polluting the lake, action taken to prevent untreated effluents from entering the lake, whether any polluted lake water is released into the Musi.
On May 26 the SC asked NGT to verify whether the government is confining itself to repairing sluices and ensure that no water is unnecessarily drained out.
Professor K. Purushotham Reddy, an expert in political sciences said, "The NGT is going against its very purpose. Instead of speeding up the inspection it has added 10 new terms and it has not looked into the seriousness of the case."
Mr Devaraj Ashok, the other member of the NGT team said, "The TS government has so far not sent any invite for the inspection although the NGT asked it and the GHMC to arrange transport and other facilities for the inspection."
