Coimbatore: Python treated for multiple injuries

The snake was in a critical condition as the net had strangled its neck
Coimbatore: A python, which suffered multiple injuries all over its body after it got trapped in a fishing net, was sutured and treated on Monday at the veterinary hospital in Ettimadai.
The eight-year-old male python, which is around eight-feet-long, was found trapped in a fishing net kept by the fishermen at the bund of a dam in Walayar. The snake rescuers rescued the reptile by removing the nylon net entangled on its body and took it to the hospital on Sunday.
The snake was in a critical condition as the net had strangled its neck. “There were around four punctures, measuring around ten centimeters each on the head, stomach and body of the snake. If left as such, ants would have intensified the wounds causing its death,” he said. The python had come to prey on a rabbit that was in the net.
“After swallowing the rabbit, the snake couldn’t come out of the net and got trapped. During the course of treatment, the snake’s wounds were sutured by administering sedatives and antibiotics. As the snake suffered blood loss during surgery, it is still fed with liquid diet,” Mr Ashokan said.
The snake will be released into forest after keeping it under observation for few more days. The snake’s injury marks will also vanish once fresh skin grows on its body.
