Coimbatore: New areas hope to get good civic amenities

Currently the corporation has undertaken repair work in the UGD pipelines
Coimbatore: While the inhabitants in the erstwhile corporation are hoping that the civic body will complete the underground drainage work expeditiously, those in the newly added areas have urged the corporation to commence work so that they also get the basic facilities that the other wards enjoy.
At a council meeting conducted in March this year, it was resolved to lay storm water drains in the newly added areas in three phases and a sum of Rs 554.35 crore was sanctioned for the first phase. The roads that were damaged due to the laying of Underground Drainage and upgradation of drinking water distribution system in the other areas were to be repaired with assistance from the Tamil Nadu Urban Development funds to a tune of Rs 1,763.40 lakh. Under the Integrated Urban Development Scheme, new tar roads will be laid in the corporation city limits at a cost of Rs 20 crore over a stretch of 32.224 km.
The newly added areas such as Thudiyalur, Kavundampalayam, Vadavalli, Veerakeralam, Chinna Vedampatty, Saravanampatty, Kurichi, Kuniamuthur, Kalapatti are looking to benefit from the amount that has been allotted. The delay in commencement of work has been attributed to the fact that the corporation has been busy repairing the UGD systems inside the city.
Currently the corporation has undertaken repair work in the UGD pipelines at Krishnasamy road and Sukrawarpet. With the passage of time and continuous flow of sewage, the concrete pipelines get corroded and damaged.
When the pipelines get damaged and fall they also pull down the earth, resulting in damage to the road surface, corporation sources said. The concrete main pipelines on Big Bazaar street, Oppanakara street, in Sukhrawarpet, Kottaimedu, and Uppilipalayam and a few other areas were very old and were creating issues to the civic body as they have been laid in 1954 and form part of the old town.
