Telangana to finance Kanthanapalli Hydro Electric Power Project
Hyderabad: The TS government will revive the 280-MW Kanthanapalli Hydro Electric Power Project at Kanthanapalli near Eturunagaram, Warangal district.
A communication to this effect was reportedly sent from the irrigation department to TS Genco to prepare a fresh detailed project report, according to informed sources.
The project was about to materialised in 2013 but was put off due to the bifurcation of the state. Earlier, the government of undivided AP had considered financing the project through a loan for 70 per cent of the cost, but now the governemnt wants build it with its own funds. The estimated cost of the hydel project is over Rs 1,300 crore.
The P.V. Narasimha Rao Kanthanapalli Sujala Sravanthi Project to give the project its full name on the river Godavari was designed six years ago and a hydel project was also conceived for it.
The original capacity of the hydel project was 360 MW but was reduced to 280 MW due to technical reasons. Contec, that offers Consulting, engineering and project management services, had prepared a DPR but a new one based on current requirements has been sought.
The project will have six units of 46.67 MW each. The governemnt has directed officials to complete the project in 24 months.
The Kanthanapally project provides drinking water facility to nearly eight lakh people in Khammam, Nalgonda and Warangal districts. The irrigation project has a capacity of 22.5 tmc ft and diverts 50 tmc ft annually.
The water will be lifted and pumped into the Kakatiaya canal which is 221 km away. This will be done to stabilise the area under irrigation under the Sriram Sagar Project Stage-I and II. The power project will be at Kanthanapalli village.
