Reconsider killing of strays: PFA-Kolkata
Thiruvananthapuram: In the wake of reports about the Kerala government deciding to cull ‘dangerous’ dogs, the People For Animal (PFA) – the animal welfare NGO - Kolkata has given a submission to the state authorities to rethink its decision.
The Law Secretary recently issued an order to all local bodies saying that there were no legal hurdles in killing dogs and had given the legal nod for culling strays.
The vice-president of PFA, Kolkata Prasenjit Dutta, in a submission addressed to Ministers and heads of departments urged the state government to bring together all stakeholders including residents, animal welfare organisations, local bodies, animal husbandry, and the public health department to draw up a plan for the long term implementation of the ABC programme and not to cull dogs.
Secretary of PFA (Kerala) Leela Latheef said that it was unfortunate that the government was taking such stands violating animal rights.
She said that the PFA would be handing over a letter to the Chief Minister in this regard.
“We want the government to clearly scrutinize all SC rulings in this connection before planning something like this. Killing stray animals shouldn’t be taken as a priority by the government as there are other more important things. Our law and judicial system is providing immunity to humans who have done real bad things including rapes. They walk out scot-free but when it comes to dogs, they are ordering for a mass culling which is already taking place,” said Leela Latheef.
