City boy, Jayanth Ramachandra aka The Sine Painter is the only artiste from India to be chosen for an intensive music course in Paris

Jayanth Ramachandra
It’s bonjour Paris for city boy, Jayanth Ramachandra aka The Sine Painter! Touted as one of India’s emerging electronic music producers, this 23-year-old has been chosen for the Red Bull Music Academy to be held in Paris, later this year. Picked from over 4,509 applications across 37 countries, this Bengalurean will now fly to the City of Love to give wings to his love – dreamy, deep house music, whilst taking part in studio lessons, workshops and jam sessions with legendary artistes from across the world!
On seeing the automated message in his inbox, this city youngster initially thought it was a mistake. “But all in all, I’m nervous and excited at the same time to share the platform with some really talented people from across the world,” says Jayanth, who is looking forward to getting a taste of varied music and having his technical queries answered at the Academy in October.
The month-long intensive course at the Academy is all set to be plumped with studio sessions, workshops and lectures with celebrated artistes. At night, Jayanth will be one of the few to join the lineup at one of the many events that will take place at la Gaîté lyrique and throughout Paris! “Here in Bengaluru, the crowd is only just getting warmed up to alternate electronic. I suppose Parisians are already glued in,” he laughs.
Coming from an academically-oriented family that wasn’t ‘musical’, “I got into it pretty late,” he says, reminiscing his brush with tunes in high school at National Academy for Learning (NAFL). It was only after finishing his Information Science degree from BMS College and while working at the IISc that he took on visualising music. “You don’t really need a formal education in music. The value of the DJ depends on the knowledge of his music alone,” says the bloke who’s floating deep house is inspired by the likes of British house don Matthew Herbert, Levon Vincent, and German mainstay Roman Flügel. His rolling, elastic rhythms and warm grooves play into his philosophy of striving to balance entertainment with art. Of course he gets the ‘This isn’t my type of music’ remarks, but Jayanth only shirks them off and continues to ease the crowds into it.
Being one of the few chosen, Jayanth is now grabbing ears and eyeballs. “My parents have finally figured that I’m doing something with my life,” he grins. “But, I’m not going there to impress anyone. I’m just looking at having a great learning experience and absorbing as much of the Parisian music culture as I can,” says Jayanth, about flying to the Academy that has previously seen the likes of popular drummer and music producer Jivraj Singh, mohan-veena player Jeet Gupta and music producer Sonal D’Silva, before their flight to fame.
Jayanth may only be over five gigs old, but he has come a long way since playing with the console at Love Shack – his first gig. “I’d have probably taken to studying more about artificial intelligence if not for this,” says the bloke who can’t get enough of Star Wars, Megas XLR cartoons and retro video game soundtracks. But for now, it’s all about speaking through music for Jayanth.
