New curriculum for 2-year B.Ed to be released soon

IT have been given more importance in the new B.Ed course

Tirunelveli: The revised curriculum to suit the bachelor of education (B.Ed) course, the duration of which is to be extended for two years from this academic year, will be released in the official website of the ‘Tamilnadu teachers education university’ by Monday, said the education university vice-chancellor Dr G. Visvanathan.

Speaking to the media here on Saturday before addressing the principals and correspondents of around 120 teacher education colleges in the five districts of Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram at St John’s college for teacher education, Visvanathan said that the number of papers for the two year B.Ed course has been increased to nine in the first year and seven in the second year. The curriculum for the extended course, according to the vice-chancellor, has been formulated giving more thrust on research.

The teaching practice for B.Ed students has been increased to 100 hours as per the new syllabus against the previous year’s 40 hours. A student doing the two year B.Ed course should complete four weeks of teaching practice in the first year and 16 weeks of teaching practice in the second year,” he said, adding, yoga, performing arts, cultural studies and IT have been given more importance in the new B.Ed course in the state.

Further the vice chancellor said, the colleges in the state have been instructed to enhance their infrastructure with a minimum of 16 assistant professors including a principal of eight years teaching experience with Ph.D degree in teacher education. As per norms of the National council of teacher education (NCTE), the physical infrastructure too should be enhanced, said the vice-chancellor, who explained that a teacher education college must have an area of 24,000 sq.ft. G. Visvanathan said that the university has been taking measures to digitize the libraries in all the B.Ed colleges in the state, adding, that every college library must have a minimum of 6000 ISBN numbered books covering 400 topics and subscribe to least tem journals of which three must be of international level.
