Women’s college sees red over jeans, purdah

The college has over 80 per cent of Muslim students and a majority of them wears purdah
KOZHIKODE: Purdah, jeans and leggings are out and churidar, salwar kameez and hijab (head scarf) are in . This is what the new ‘dress code’ of the Women’s College at Nadakavu, run by the Muslim Educational Society, proposes.
A circular, issued by the management, says that the first-year degree students has to wear a uniform of churidar and coat from July 8 onwards. The second and third-year students should wear salwar kameez only. Those who prefer hijab (head scarf) can use it.
Though the circular did not impose any ban on purdah, jeans or leggings, the message is loud and clear. The college has over 80 per cent of Muslim students and a majority of them wears purdah. The dress code has not gone down well with many.
MES state president Dr P.A. Fasal Gafoor said, “There is no ban on anything. It is the introduction of a uniform. The system has been in practice in all other institutions of MES. A few religious extremists are making an issue out of it.”
Earlier, Dr Gafoor had publicly spoken against purdah saying that it was an Arabian dress and not Indian. Principal Prof. B. Seethalakshmi also said that the decision was to implement a uniform dress for the students. But Muslim Students Federation, the student wing of Indian Union Muslim League, told that such dress codes will be resisted.
