Karnataka: Authorities lock sugar factories
BENGALURU: Armed with an order of the state government to initiate action against managements of sugar factories which have failed to pay Rs 200 a ton of sugarcane, district authorities in Belagavi, Bagalkot and Vijayapura locked factories and their warehouses with stocks of sugar.
According to official sources, as many as 14 factories were sealed in Belagavi district, eight in Bagalkot and four in Vijayapura districts. This morning, a team of officials confiscated sugar stock and locked factories in Bagalkot district. Such measurers, however, were moving at a slow pace in Belagavi district as the authorities concerned were busy on the eve of the monsoon session of legislature scheduled to commence in Suvarna Vidhana Soudha on Monday.
Besides, tahsildhars first gave their reports to assistant commissioners who in turn brought it to the notice of deputy commissioners before sharing the information with department of sugar. Meanwhile, officers of the revenue department locked four sugar factories in Vijayapura district. The quantum of sugar stock seized would be known on Sunday.
