Deepika Singh, who plays Sandhya Rathi in Diya Aur Bati Hum, talks about the show’s increasing popularity, her character and more

One of the most popular actresses in TV currently is Deepika Singh, who plays Sandhya Rathi in Diya Aur Bati Hum. Over time, Deepika’s character Sandhya has made her way into the hearts of millions. Talking about it, Deepika says, “I feel blessed and extremely proud of myself. The way my character Sandhya has evolved over the years gives me immense satisfaction as an actor. At a time when women are getting stronger by the day, the fact that I am beating up strong guys feels surreal. A woman does not necessarily have to be clad in a sari, she has the rights to do anything she wants and live her dreams, which is what my character has been doing. I personally really admire my character Sandhya and the way she tackles anything that comes her way.”

She adds that she knew that the role would be a special one from the beginning. “When I got to know Sandhya’s character sketch, I knew this role wasn't going to be stereotypical in any way. I was sure that it would break barriers and be an exception. Sandhya is different from the other bahus we see on screen. She is an all-rounder.”

About the show’s future, where she will go undercover for a top secret mission involving national security, she says, “The track is going to be very interesting. I am also going to have an all-new avatar and I am really excited. I cannot reveal much but the audience will be stunned.” Asked about rumours that she did not get along with her co-star Anas Rashid, she says, “It’s not at all true. We're both professional actors and we respect each other for what we are. We are very cordial and it translates on screen as well.”

Deepika is totally taken by Devyansh Tapuriah who plays her son Ved on screen. “He is an absolute sweetheart,” she says, adding, “I get to learn so much from him. At such a young age, he's so talented and I love having him around. The sets are always bubbling with activity. My relation with Devyansh is very special. He is very naughty and a lot of fun to be around. I really adore him and I’m glad I get to spend so much time with him.”

Her husband Rohit Raj is the show’s director and that has to be plus for her. She explains, “On the sets both of us are extremely professional and it’s so hectic that we don’t really get time on the sets but yeah I have a comfort zone with him around. That feels special. We do have little moments here and there and I like it that way. It feels special.”

Deepika is also one of the fittest looking bahus around. Asked about her fitness regime, she says, “I make it a point to workout without fail. This is something I follow religiously. I believe health is wealth. Every morning before I go to the sets, I work out for an hour, and I also make sure that I eat healthy. I am focused on leading a healthy lifestyle and more importantly, even my character requires me to stay fit so it all fits the bill.”

Will we see her anytime in Nach Baliye or any other reality show? “I do what I love and I love what I’m doing. This show has given me a lot and I want to be loyal to it. But I am open to whatever comes my way, big or small, but currently I’m very happy with the way things are shaping up. I love dancing so I would love to do a dance reality show,” she says.

During her downtime, Deepika says she watches TV, works out and does yoga. “I prefer doing anything that I otherwise wouldn’t get enough time to do. I cook and even clean the house. I enjoy these little things that I don't get to do often. Little things make me really happy.” Talking about the highs of being part of a hit show, she says, “I get a lot of love and affection from my fans. A lot of popularity. The best thing is that my character is so popular that women take back a lot from it and are standing up for anything wrong.
