Samsung intentionally blocked Windows updates on laptops

The Korean tech giant has been reportedly blocking the automatic updates for Windows

Samsung has been reportedly blocking all Windows updates on their laptops on purpose. The issue aroused when people started questioning Microsoft with issues relating to their Windows not updating. After researching about what the problem could be, it was found that Samsung has deliberately disabled the updating feature for Windows on their laptops.

The Bidness Etc reported that Patrick Barker, a Microsoft MVP, reverse engineered the Samsung product updating application and found that a file named ‘Disable_Windowsupdate.exe’ was run in the background and restricted Windows from updating. The Samsung software update file ‘SW Update’ needed to be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website as part of the laptop update tool. The zip file includes the executable in question file from Samsung’s website along with its digital certificate signed by Samsung.

Patrick mentioned that the issue was serious and can put users at risk. In a statement, Patrick mentioned, "Windows Update remains a critical component of our security commitment to our customers. We do not recommend disabling or modifying Windows Update in any way as this could expose a customer to increased security risks. We are in contact with Samsung to address this issue."

The complete analysis on the issue was scrutinized by Patrick and is available on his blog.
