Get ready for a slimmer smartphone with double the battery capacity
Samsung, the Korean tech giant has been working on a technology for improving the battery capacity so that mobile devices can enjoy a longer battery life. The research arm of Samsung has announced that they have a breakthrough in doubling the capacity of a battery as compared to the existing technology.
Samsung’s engineers have managed to make a silicon cathode for coating high crystal graphene on a silicon surface. This will increase the energy density to almost twice that of existing lithium batteries.
Lithium batteries, developed initially by Sony in the 90s managed to extend the capacity and energy rating of a battery to a large extent. However, there are technological issues which lower the life of the battery due to repeated charging and discharging cycles.
Business Korea reported that ‘The R&D center of Samsung Electronics has succeeded in developing a high-density and highly-durable cathode material by coating the strong and conductive graphene on the surface of the silicon to create a kind of protective layer around the silicon.’
Samsung has been on the research and development of high capacity batteries since long to differentiate itself from the rivals in the market. This change will bring a significant change to both the mobile and car industry. The research results were published in the online journal Nature Communications.
