Visakhapatnam: Finally, after much delay, Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) had handed over diesel-electric submarine INS Sindhukirti to the Indian Navy after a medium refit which began in June 2006 at the defence-controlled yard.
The medium refit of the 24-year-old kilo-class submarine was to be completed in three years from the time of the work has begun. HSL chairman and managing director (CMD) N.K. Mishra handed over the submarine to the Indian navy officials at a simple ceremony held on Friday.
On completion of sea sortie, the submarine would be berthed at the naval dockyard. HSL is the first shipyard in India to undertake such major repairs and modernisation of an EKM class submarine thereby extending her useful operational life and providing a potent platform for the Navy, said Mr Mishra.
The medium refit, included extensive major overhauls of machinery and systems and modernisations of sonar and missile equipment with the help of M/s Rosboronexport (ROE), Russia and Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.
The submarine has been completely modernised and upgraded with state-of-art fire control system and modification to torpedo tubes for firing of missiles. Also, it has been fitted with indigenous advan-ced sonar and communication suites, upgraded A/C plants, 400 Bar HP air compressor, apart from Russian supplied weapon and navigational package.
During the refit, nearly 100 km of cabling and 30 km of mostly high pressure piping has been rene-wed, thereby making this the most advanced refit ever to be undertaken in an Indian Yard. Hitherto such major refits were undertaken at Russia.
