Met officials clueless about ‘heat wave’

The heat wave that lashed coastal parts dried trees and plants, leaving the residents in agony

THRISSUR: The Agricultural meteorology Department is yet to come to a conclusion on the suspected ‘heat wave’ that was experienced in the coastal belts of the district the other day.

The heat wave that lashed coastal parts dried trees and plants, leaving the residents in agony.

“The phenomenon has never been noticed and it is a contradictory idea of heat wave and rain together. This has happened in the coastal region and hence the salt infusion in the wind needs to be checked”, said Dr Ajith, Head of the department of Agricultural meteorology, college of Horticulture.

He added that the department would take up further steps if assistance was sought. Meanwhile, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has decided to carry out a detailed study of the heat wave phenomenon. The report is expected today.

On the other hand, Ajith refuted any sort of climatic change referring to the strong wind that has been prevailing over the city for the last few days.

“Usually the monsoon’s arrival is marked by wind and this year it has come late.” However, he added that the reason behind the collapse of trussed roofs because of the strong wind was natural.

According to him, truss roofs have less number of holes for the wind to pass by and hence it turned destructive. Owing to the danger caused by the continuing wind and rain in the city, City police commissioner Nishanthini R has given an order to remove all dangerous flex boards immediately.
